Amine Sweetening

Advanced Gas Sweetening Systems for Reliable Acid Gas Removal

Natural gas often contains hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and other sulfur compounds that must be removed before transportation and processing. These acid gases, when mixed with water, form corrosive compounds that can damage pipelines and downstream equipment. The process of removing such impurities is known as gas sweetening.

SPEC designs and delivers Amine Sweetening Units tailored to specific process requirements, offering turnkey skid-mounted systems that minimize on-site installation time and cost. Our proven designs help clients meet sulfur content regulations, prevent corrosion, and increase the heating value of natural gas.

Process Overview

The sour gas stream first passes through an inlet scrubber to eliminate contaminants, ensuring optimal contact between the gas and the amine solution. Inside the absorber tower, trays or structured packing provide sufficient surface area for the amine to absorb hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from the rising gas stream.

The “sweet gas” exits the top of the absorber, while the rich amine solution—now containing absorbed gases—flows out from the bottom. This rich amine is then regenerated through heating and stripping in the reboiler and still column, releasing acid gases and restoring the amine for reuse. The continuous regeneration cycle ensures consistent system efficiency and longevity.

Software Integration

To achieve precision and reliability in every system, SPEC utilizes PROMAX® with TSWEET® by Bryan Research & Engineering. These specialized simulation tools enable optimized design and performance prediction for amine plants. By combining software modeling with in-house expertise, SPEC ensures that every sweetening unit meets international design and safety standards.
