Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Fractionation

The fractionation process is used to separate bulk natural gas liquids (NGLs) into individual components such as ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline (C5+), or any combination of these products. Using a series of fractionation towers, SPEC engineers design systems that efficiently exploit the relative volatility of each component to achieve precise separation.

Our turnkey LPG recovery systems are designed to ensure consistent product quality, optimal recovery rates, and compliance with safety and performance standards. Each plant is engineered to suit the specific gas composition and operating conditions of the client’s facility.

Process Description

Heat is introduced at the base of each fractionation tower, driving lighter and more volatile components upward while heavier components move downward. A liquid reflux stream from the top of the tower enhances this separation, ensuring efficient phase contact between the vapor and liquid.

Inside the tower, tray installations allow continuous vapor–liquid interaction to achieve the desired degree of separation. The first product to be extracted is ethane, followed by propane, butane, and finally natural gasoline. The number of towers required depends on the level of product purity and recovery efficiency needed for each project.
